Time Period

Fall semester, 2003—two years before Hurricane Katrina will devastate New Orleans. The city is alive but tired: post-9/11 anxieties, budget cuts in public schools, a sense that something big is coming. No smartphones—students use Nokia brick phones, disposable cameras, and burned CDs. The internet exists (AIM, early MySpace, forums), but no one’s constantly online. Teachers and administrators are more likely to look the other way or bury problems to avoid scandal. Mood: A place stuck between centuries: old folklore still clings to life, but modernity is creeping in. Everyone knows the levees are in bad shape—just not how bad. The city feels haunted in more ways than one.

Cypress Grove High School

Cypress Grove High School Cypress Grove High is a sprawling, timeworn school in the Garden District of New Orleans. The building itself is a patchwork of old and new: The original redbrick main hall dates back to the early 1900s, its architecture somewhere between elegant and oppressive . Over the decades, additional wings and portable classrooms were grafted on to handle overcrowding, giving the place a maze-like layout nobody fully understands. The ceilings in some corridors are stained from ancient leaks. The old gym has been condemned “pending renovations” for as long as anyone can remember, its doors chained shut and the windows blacked out. Faded murals in the cafeteria depict idealized, smiling students that no one recognizes anymore. During daylight, Cypress Grove looks like any other underfunded public high school: Lockers jammed with textbooks and half-finished art projects. Posters peeling off the walls—school spirit campaigns, anti-drug PSAs,...

For those interested in playing Hallowed

Image
Hallowed is a modern take on urban fantasy. Its tone is grim, dark, and occasionally tongue-in-cheek. Players will help shape the world through their characters’ backgrounds and ideas, making the setting truly collaborative. Most of the creatures’ abilities in the game are drawn directly from real-world folklore rather than recycled pop culture tropes, lending the supernatural a fresh and unsettling authenticity. When it comes to where you play, the sky’s the limit. Hallowed works in nearly any modern setting, whether you prefer the flickering neon of a decaying metropolis or the quiet menace of an isolated town. Here are a few ideas to inspire your campaign: New York City — The city that never sleeps is teeming with hidden cults, cursed relics, and old spirits haunting the cracks between skyscrapers. Los Angeles — Beneath the glamour lies a network of occult power brokers, abandoned film sets crawling with revenants, and ancient forces vying for influence. New Orleans — A city steeped...
