The Vetala is a fearsome creature from Hindu folklore, often likened to a vampire but far stranger and more unsettling than its European cousins. Unlike the pale aristocrats of Western myth, the Vetala is an unquiet spirit that inhabits and puppeteers corpses. It haunts cemeteries, charnel grounds, and places steeped in death, its presence marked by a sudden chill and a stench of decay.

The Kappa is a towering, nightmarish yokai that haunts rivers, ponds, and marshes across Japan. Kappa stand six feet tall on average, their amphibious frames looming over most humans. Their slick, green skin glistens in moonlight, and a broad, turtle-like shell reinforces their backs.

Kappa possess superhuman strength and speed, especially in water. They can seize an adult in moments, dragging their victims below the surface with terrifying force. Once they have their prey, their feeding begins in earnest: these creatures are infamous for consuming the entrails of its prey through the anus, leaving behind only a hollow, ghastly husk. This gruesome habit has made them figures of both horror and dark fascination in local folklore.

One of their most dangerous qualities is their obsessive fixation on politeness. Kappa demand formal bows, ritual greetings, and unfailing courtesy from any human who crosses their path. A traveler who fails to observe proper decorum may be attacked without hesitation. Yet, their respect for etiquette is not a mercy—it is a trap. Even a minor breach of protocol can provoke a lethal response, and they often test humans with subtle provocations to catch them in some imagined slight.

These Kappa are extraordinarily resilient. They can regenerate from wounds over the course of hours, restoring torn flesh and broken bones so long as the moon shines overhead. This regeneration makes them nearly impossible to kill without sustained effort and the right timing. In darkness or daylight, they can be injured as any living thing, but once moonlight touches them, their bodies begin to knit back together.

Encounters with Kappa are as much a battle of wits and manners as of strength. They are cunning, patient, and never fully sated. Even when they lurk unseen beneath still water, their presence can be felt—a chill on the breeze, ripples where there should be none, and the uneasy certainty that something ancient and hungry is watching.
